Indiana University Center for Underwater Science conducted underwater archaeological investigations of the historic shipwreck J.D. Marshall in order to produce an accurate 3D model, which will aid researchers and site managers in tracking the state of biological and cultural resources on the J.D. Marshall Nature Preserve. The results of these investigations can be used for baseline monitoring and management, as well as for increased interpretation for public outreach and education.

Rope Hoist

First documented in 2021 by IU, this rope hoist represents machinery used in the day-to-day operations of the JD Marshall as a lumber hooker, transferring lumber onto and off the vessel via a system of pulleys and booms.
Boiler

The J.D. Marshall’s large scotch boiler consists of three components, all riveted together: the firebox, condenser, and preheater. The firebox was equipped with a large airflow grate on its mounting surface, and its primary function was to prevent fires around its attachment to the ship’s main frame. Today, the boiler assembly is located on the port side of the wreck in about 30-35’ of water.
Engine

The Marshall’s large single cylinder engine is located on the starboard side opposite of the boiler, about 20’ away from the stern post. The engine forms the upper part of the entire engine assembly, and it has spilled from the aft of the engine room around the stern area.
Propeller

The four-bladed propeller is cast iron and weighs several tons. When stopping the illegal salvage attempt made in 1982, District 11 Conservation Officer personnel confiscated the propeller to avoid losing it to the salvagers (Ellis 1985). Today, the propeller is on exhibit at Indiana Dunes State Park Pavilion.
Bell

The J.D. Marshall’s bell was salvaged and was later donated to the Indiana DNR. During the fall of 2019, the IU Center for Underwater Science worked on the reconstruction of the bell for improved outreach at the Indiana DNR Nature Preserve. Today, the bell is on exhibit at Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center.
